A10Thunderbolt

The Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt is one of the selectable fighters from U.N. Squadron.

Real World Information[]

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). Commonly referred to by the nicknames "Warthog" or "Hog", its official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II fighter-bomber effective at attacking ground targets. The A-10 was designed for close air support (CAS) of friendly ground troops, attacking armored vehicles and tanks, and providing quick-action support against enemy ground forces. It entered service in 1976 and is the only production-built aircraft that has served in the USAF that was designed solely for CAS. Its secondary mission is to provide forward air controller – airborne (FAC-A) support, by directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets.

In The Games[]

The A-10 first appeared in the Arcade version of U.N. Squadron, where it serves as Greg Gates' fighter of choice. Among the available fighters it is the one with the best defense, taking less damage from enemies and collisions. It is specialized in air-to-ground combat, having a good selection of air-to-ground weapons and also being unique in that it has a second vulcan aimed 45° downwards, though this is balanced by this ship taking the longest to upgrade it's main weapon.

On the SNES version of the game, the A-10 costs $350000 to purchase. It is more or less identical to it's Arcade counterpart, with it's firepower only being upgradeable to a maximum of 3 points to compensate for it's general versatility.
