V3

The V3 Rocket is the second boss from 1941: Counter Attack. It is based on the German V2 Rocket.

Real World Information

The V-2 (German: Vergeltungswaffe 2, "Retribution Weapon 2"), technical name Aggregat-4 (A-4), was the world's first long-range[4] guided ballistic missile. The missile with a liquid-propellant rocket engine was developed during the Second World War in Germany as a "vengeance weapon," designed to attack Allied cities as retaliation for the Allied bombings against German cities. The V-2 rocket also became the first artificial object to cross the boundary of space with the vertical launch of V-177 on 20 June 1944.

Beginning in September 1944, over 3,000 V-2s were launched by the German Wehrmacht against Allied targets during the war, first London and later Antwerp and Liège. According to a 2011 BBC documentary, the attacks resulted in the deaths of an estimated 9,000 civilians and military personnel, while 12,000 forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners died producing the weapons.

In the Game

Players have to pursue the V3 inside a missile silo as it is launched. The V3 itself never attacks directly, though players must be careful with it's fire engines and the turrets on the walls. The players must destroy the two side engines first before going for the main body, which upon being destroyed will release the warhead on the top, which is the final target.

Trivia

  • The real V3 was a prototype supergun cannon, destroyed by allied forces before it was completed.
